“Classical” classification
Acanthomorphs “classical” classification is mainly based on morpho-anatomic data and was exposed in Nelson (2006). This classification was not entirely supported by the results of phylogenetic analyses.
The results of the team
The results of the team are based on the comparison of the sequences of several genes and they are congruent with the results of other international teams.
Nelson, J. S. 2006. Fishes of the world. John Wiley and Sons, Inc. New York. 4th edition. 601 pp.
Regarding the “classical” classification, several things must be pointed out. Some groups of the "left" side are scattered on the "right" side : the pink one ( the "percoids"), the orange one (the "labroids") and the yellow one (the "scombroids") for instance. As others do not disappear but "move" within the classification : zeoids (John Dory), gasterosteids (sticklebacks), pleuronectiformes (flatfishes), tetraodontiformes (sun-fishes and puffers) and lophiiformes (monkfishes)... Everything turns topsy-turvey!
